Make the Most of Lockdown: 5 Tips to Keep Your Mind and Body Active

Amid another wave of COVID-19, it starts to feel monotonous. I know as well as everyone else who is going stir crazy that being stuck in the home for days on end can seem torturous at times. Other than those essential grocery trips or taking the dog for a walk, we have to make the most of our time on the inside. Since the previous lockdown I came up with some great ways to keep my mind and body active, so when we are given the all-clear I can be my best self! Don’t waste your time watching reruns of the same sitcom over and over. Here I will be sharing with you my top 5 tips to keep your mind and body active during lockdown!

  1. New hobbies

Have you always wanted to learn a new skill but never had the time? Well, let me tell you that the time is now! Whether you want to take up knitting or learn how to become a chess master, take the opportunity to learn a new skill. While in lockdown last year I took the chance to learn a new language. I may not get a chance to utilise my talent until international borders open back up, but it was a great way to keep my mind ticking over when I was unable to interact with so many people I was used to seeing weekly.

Some great ideas include arts and crafts, make use of those Pinterest pages you have been following for so long! Learn to play online games with people around the world, or even try and get your friends together over Zoom for a virtual escape room each week. This is a great time to pick up those things you never thought you would have the chance to try!

  1. Pick up a side-hustle

This is probably a much more profitable tip and it is a great way to utilise your existing talents to make some extra cash. This is especially important if you have lost work due to the pandemic.

One great way to make some money if you have a way with words is through freelance writing. There are plenty of sites that offer a platform to get paid to write various content and it is all online! Other ideas include teaching online classes in your area of expertise. Or even starting a safe and socially distanced, workout group. The possibilities are endless if you put your mind to them. You will find that many opportunities, despite being online, will allow you the chance to get up and get moving, whether you are on the hunt for supplies, or meeting at a local park to get your daily exercise in with a larger audience.

  1. Start a new workout routine

They say that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. These few weeks at a time of lockdown is certainly a great start! There are so many online workout programs to suit a range of people. You can find yoga, Pilates, aerobics, weight training, and so much more!

I am guilty of never having the time to keep my body in check. When we are working and housekeeping, and making sure the family is fed and happy our fitness can often fall by the wayside. But this is your chance to do something for yourself and your well-being! Start working out as often as you can, whether you prefer a daily, biweekly, or more intensive regime. This is your chance to come out of COVID-19 lockdown looking and feeling your best!

  1. Try new dishes at home

After coming home from a long day at work I am sure many people can agree that cooking is the last thing you want to be doing. I would much rather sit on the couch, with a dressing gown and a glass of wine watching a new episode of the Bachelorette. But, during COVID-19 lockdown I have a newfound passion for cooking. There is something about trying new dishes, and the satisfaction of cooking them yourself that I find so rewarding.

I have taken the opportunity to try new dishes from around the world. My kids and I have a game where we pick a country at random on the world map and find a dish that is enjoyed widely in the chosen location. I have to say, there are some things that I would have never tried, but found surprisingly good!

Bratwurst has become a staple at my home, who knew German food tasted so good?! But with travel restrictions in place, it is a great way to feel adventurous without even leaving the home. Who knows, you may find your next favourite dish too!

  1. Make the most of family time

This is the number 1 most important tip for your COVID-19 lockdown. Slow down and enjoy family time. Teach your kids how to play games you loved as a child. Cards and board games have become a thing of the past, but now they are being recreated in digital formats for the whole family to enjoy.

It is a great way to have fun and enjoy time with your loved ones, especially in this fast-paced world where we never seem to stop. Take the chance to breathe and focus on what is important to you. Lockdown can be a gift if you choose to see it that way, and getting that extra time with my family has shown me what is key to surviving lockdown.

So, whatever you decide, make the most of this round of lockdown. Keep safe, stay indoors and find your new passion. There are so many ways that we can keep our mind and body active despite the fact we are unable to leave the home. Don’t sleep through your time at home, get crafty and find something that interests you. Dust off the old Monopoly board, whip out Grandma’s knitting needles, search online for a new workout and make the most of it! Lockdown can bring great opportunities and I would hate for us to let it pass by!
