Top Hair Care Must-Knows for Super Smooth and Luscious Hair

There is nothing we want more in this world than to have smooth, luscious, healthy-looking locks. During the winter months, I find that my hair is often dried out and frizzy from the cool, dry air that surrounds me, whether I am at work, at home, or out and about.

That is why below I have compiled my top 7 tips to give us all that smooth, soft, luscious hair we have all been dreaming of! These few adjustments to your daily routine will see all the difference in your hair and make it shine! Adding a few things, like a daily, protein-based shampoo, or more regular trims will help your hair to remain healthy and luscious.

  1. Protein-based shampoos and conditioners

A simple change to my shampoo and conditioner has made a world of difference for me, and I would hazard to guess it can do the same for all of you! I know that consuming protein in my diet is important to stay strong, lean, and overall healthy. But did you know that your hair needs this just as much as the rest of you?

One study in the Dermatology Practical and Conceptual found that protein directly relates to hair loss and affects the health of your hair. This means that adding protein to my hair care regime wherever possible is just a must!

By adding protein into my hair care routine, I have found that I minimise breakage and other forms of damage to my hair. It keeps my hair strong, silky, and healthy all over. One of the easiest ways I add protein is by using a protein-rich shampoo and conditioner combination.

Frizziness, dullness, dryness, and thinning hair can all be avoided when I use protein-based shampoos and conditioners regularly. It repairs the damage I have done to my hair while also helping to strengthen it and make it thick and smooth at the same time. I feel so much better when I look in the mirror and see how amazing my hair looks after I use my shampoo and conditioner combination!

  1. Beauty supplements

In 2017 the beauty supplement trend reached its peak and I saw many different Instagram models and celebrities promoting these products. That was when I decided to try them for myself and I can honestly say it has changed my hair for the better!

They are certainly not a gimmick and worth the money that you invest in them. They also help to heighten my mood and improve my complexion while repairing and strengthening my damaged hair. The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology confirmed this in a study performed in 2012 when they tested the effect of these supplements on thinning hair and hair health.

Hair supplements use a few ingredients that boost shine and strength in your hair and the main ingredient I look for is biotin.  It is a naturally occurring vitamin, vitamin B7, that has a great positive impact on the health of your nails, skin, and hair. It can also be found in a lot of serums and supplements alike. It helps your body to more effectively absorb the nutrients and leads to great results for your hair!

I love the gummy supplements that you can get from your local chemist or even online, but they come in tablet form or powders too.

  1. Invest in your hair

Healthy hair unfortunately does not come for free. There are a few lucky people among us, who I am extremely jealous of, who can do nothing to their hair and keep it shiny and healthy-looking with very little effort. I, like many of us, am not so lucky in this regard.

I don’t spend everything that I earn on my hair, that is just not practical, but what I am saying is that you do not want to skimp on the hair products!

I always opt for the salon-quality products because these are the ones that are free of parabens, teas, and other nasty chemicals that can further damage my hair. You do not want to just be coating your hair with layers of chemicals. Stylists also want their clients to use products that are sulphate-free so you should use these products at home too!

These kinds of products will act to clean your hair properly without stripping it of the natural oils that keep it healthy.

Heating tools and heat protectants are also areas that you should not skimp on. When I was using low-quality heating tools I found that my hair was much drier and damaged and as soon as I made the switch I saw an amazing difference in my hair.

  1. Once a week treatments

My hair, just like me, needs a little downtime and that’s what I get when I stop and take a break with these once a week treatments. Every day my hair is exposed to the elements and it damages the follicles and makes it seem dry and unhealthy. Pollution, free-radicals, UV rays, and other environmental factors all contribute to the health of my hair, and these are things that need to be avoided where possible.

Some studies have even found that the environment can damage your hair even more than you think. Oxford Biolabs found that many contributing factors in the outside world can cause damage to the hair without us even thinking twice about it!

To counteract this damage I use a replenishing nourishing hair mask on my hair once a week to ensure that I keep up with my self-care routine. It is a great time to pop on a face mask and give myself a little TLC at the same time too!

  1. Trim your hair more often

If you are anything like me you are not the biggest fan of going to the hairdresser, so this tip is probably my least favourite out of all of them. But a regular trim is a necessary evil. It acts to re-stimulate the hair growth and gives my hair the added boost that it needs to stay healthy for longer. It will also strengthen your hair and keep it long, smooth, and luscious.

My hairdresser is pretty spot on with timeframes when recommending a trim. It is generally 4-8 weeks in between trims and your hairdresser will help to determine when you should return for your next one. I have found that this is pretty much dependant on the starting length of your hair.

One issue I have occurring between trims though is the dreaded split ends! Luckily, there is a product for every problem and I generally use a split end cream or serum to fix this quick smart. I add it into my daily routine after washing and it helps to keep those split ends at bay until I make it to my next trim!

  1. Colour your hair smarter

I am one of the many of us who love to dye our hair. It is fun to sometimes get an outrageous colour that helps me to stand out from the crowd and feel unique. However, we all know that this can in the long run damage your hair pretty substantially. I am paying the price now for years of colouring and not looking after my hair the way that I should have!

Getting the best results is something for professionals. They have the right products and the knowledge behind them to make sure that they do not damage your hair. I have had no end of issues with box dye and spending that little extra on colouring my hair properly has changed it for the better!

Using Olaplex can also help to ensure my hair is not destroyed by the colouring chemicals. It bridges unwanted gaps, or breakages, in your hair and makes it thicker and healthier before and after colouring. It is a miracle treatment!

  1. Avoid breakages!

This sounds obvious, but I have noticed that hair breakage occurs much more often than we think and in a range of different ways. Eliminating the known ways in which hair breaks is the best hope for healthier, stronger hair all year round!

I no longer tie my hair up while sleeping. If I am having an outrageously bad hair day and my hair just does not want to behave I opt for a cloth hair tie loosely tied around my hair so that it stays well out of my way. Hair elastics are prone to rubbing against the hair and causing breakages. It is especially common for them to damage the hair close to the crown of your head.

Another way I avoid breakages is by ensuring I use proper post-washing care. This means that I wait until my hair is almost dry to brush it. I also opt for a good quality brush, because my hair deserves the best and so does yours!

So, by sticking to the above tips you too can have the hair of your dreams! I have been using these strategies for my hair for quite some time and I can honestly say that I am so happy with the results! We often overlook our hair care regime, but I find that taking that little amount of time every day makes a world of difference to the outcome and has my hair looking its best every day. Say bye to bad hair days and welcome a lifetime of smooth and luscious hair!

Love & blessings
