Get your blenders out- we are going for a smooth-ie ride!
Now that the world is at a stand still and the millennials have a new hobby to pursue every week, my biggest take away has been learning to make smoothies for myself and my family.
Smoothies are easy to go, extremely quick to make, filled with potent vitamins and minerals diet for us all. Anyway, what is not to like here? Except maybe the store-bought smoothies, which can be loaded with sugar and unaccounted calories.
However, making smoothies is the easiest thing to learn. It is one of the best things I have added to my breakfast/lunch/dinner or even a quick snack whenever I want. When made at home, they are cost-effective, and you have full control over what you add to your drink.
As an entrepreneur and a mother, quick, easy kitchen hacks are always welcome. I make it a point to add veggies and season fruits to smoothies to achieve a balance between protein, carbs and healthy fats. For my kids, I rely more on the vegetables as it cuts down the sugar content further.
I also avoid adding any syrups and go au naturel. For myself, I add yogurt and protein powder to make it more filling, thus satiating my appetite for longer. Ever since I added smoothies to my diet, my skin has a beautiful and healthy glow, and I have also managed to lose weight. I think it is more about finding a perfect balance with your diet. The best part is that making yourself a smoothie is no rocket science.
Here are few of my favourite Smoothie Recipes
1. Banana Smoothie
Easy to make Banana Smoothie is the new black. I write this because Banana smoothie is one of the most filling and quick recipes, and it has a delicious taste and a mouth-watering texture. All you need is to blend 2 bananas with ½ a cup of yogurt of your choice (I prefer greek Vanilla yogurt) and milk. I like to add 2 teaspoons of honey to my smoothie, but you can add it as per your taste.
To give it a little twist, I also like to add a pinch of cinnamon as well. I personally love the aroma of cinnamon, but you can add whatever that you prefer.
Want a twist or easy digestion or something to soothe the heartburn? Add a little ginger to your banana smoothie, and now you have a home remedy that you will want to slurp ASAP! Yes, it is that tasty.
2. Green Smoothie
In 5 minutes prep time, you can give yourself a protein blast with a Green smoothie. From the widely available ingredients, mix puree of 2 cups of baby spinach with 1 chopped Granny Smith apple.
In a blender add the key ingredients with ¾ cup of coconut water, ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice and 2Tbsp of hemp seeds. You can also add freshly minced ginger and honey as per your taste. I also like to add 1 or ½ cup of ice cubes. I blend the mixture until it is smooth. The Green smoothie is also a perfect weight cutter, and it also helps to provide optimum nourishment to the body.
3. Kale Smoothie
This is my go-to smoothie before or after my workout session. The deliciously dense Kale, when mixed with banana, leaves you wanting for more. A perfect kale smoothie demands some serious blending, so don’t go easy on it. With the addition of Flaxseed, your perfect smoothie is now packed with protein, fibre and omega 3.
I add orange juice to give my palate a tangy taste, and unlike many green smoothies, Kale smoothie, when blended well, leaves no chunks of Kale. So you can enjoy an earthy, zesty smoothie, which is incredibly filling. In case you don’t want to add honey, you can also add dates – don’t forget to take the pits out before you blend them with the kale.
4. Peach Blueberry Smoothie
This is a three-ingredient smoothie- the third ingredient is LOVE! In less than 3 minutes, you can make yourself a hearty glass of Peach Blueberry Smoothie. In a blender, add 4 slices of fresh peach and ¼ cup of blueberries with almond milk ( or any milk of your choice). And voila! In one smooth blend, you get the tastiest smoothie. If you want more protein or fibre, adding a handful of Kale does the trick!
5. Triple-Berry Blend
A triple- berry blend is a smoothie hug for your organs. You can also freeze it into popsicles, and your toddlers have something juicy to enjoy. I know my kids fuss a lot with their fruits and veggies. Smoothies are an easy way to hide what the kids don’t enjoy and turn them into something that they will. For a triple-berry blend, grab 1 ½ cup of mixed blackberries, strawberries and raspberries. In a blender mix your berries with 1 cup of milk of your choice (you can also choose a non-dairy product like almond milk) and honey as per your taste. Blend until you reach a smooth consistency. And there is your perfect glass of a Berri-Mix.
I would love to know if you try these recipes! Happy summer to you all.
