Goals You Should Be Setting Yourself For The Rest Of 2021

We all know that 2020 was a turbulent year for us to say the least. I noticed that the onset of COVID-19, combined with natural disasters had a significant impact on the mental health and wellbeing of all those around me. Now that 2021 is finally here, and off to a reasonably better start, well as much as you could expect! The best way to tackle what is turning out to be a year of recovery is to make some goals for yourself. Know what you are wanting to achieve so by the end of 2021 you can feel accomplished and ready to take on anything! Below are 7 realistic goals that you should be setting yourself for the rest of 2021.

#1- Start with self-care

This is the perfect place to start for some goals in 2021. It is more of a process, getting used to putting yourself very high on your priority list. Self-care will ensure that both your physical and psychological state is in the best shape.

This could be as simple as getting in your daily exercise, eating better or ending bad habits. I started with small changes, for example, fewer cups of coffee a day, and worked up to bigger life changes.

The main goal here is to look and feel better within yourself!

#2- Reconnect with old friends

While you may still be easing back into working life, since working from home, it may be a good time to reconnect with people you have not seen in a while. This could be old workmates, peers, friends, or even family.

As shops, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues start opening up and restrictions ease take the chance to catch up with people you have not been able to see for a while. People who may not have been able to travel to you or vice versa.

Since easing restrictions I have made it my mission to rekindle old friendships. Not only does it get me out of the house and socialising again, but it widens my support network. In case of another lockdown this can be helpful for your mental health, and others too!

#3- Revisit your career goals

It is important to revisit your career goals regularly. Sometimes we leave the same goals that we had coming out of high school or finishing tertiary education in place for far too long. What will set you apart from your peers is taking the time each year to reconsider your 2021 goals and how you can work towards them.

Some professionals recommend doing so every 5 years. But I think one thing COVID has taught us is that your life can change at a moments notice. So once a year I revisit my career goals and see if what I am doing now and the strategies I put in place are effective and optimal.

#4- Keep a daily 2021 journal

Many of us already keep a daily journal. This is a great way to document your life and look back to remember the relevant and important parts of your life. It can help us to record our shortcomings and improve on ourselves. This is a great way to reflect on the positives.

Experts recommend journaling for 5 minutes every morning and also 5 minutes at night. But if this is not practical for you then once a day is enough. Sometimes I find that once a day can even be too much. Some days nothing important happens, I have no new or relevant emotions to record, or I just feel lazy or too busy. If once a day does not work then once every two days or even once a week is a step in the right direction. Once a week, writing can be a struggle in regards to your memory, which is why a daily journal is much more effective for reflection purposes.

#5- Keep funds for emergencies

One of the most important realisations that have come from the recent pandemic is that no job is secure. Every one of us is disposable under different circumstances. This can lead to an eviction from your home or other hardships.

This is why I have made it a goal in 2021, to have a significant emergency fund. If something were ever to happen that affected my job then I would like a decent amount of money to keep me afloat when times get tough. It is not something I have thought about before, but the pandemic has certainly pushed me to save more and spend less.

#6- Keep a minimalist wardrobe

Having a minimalistic wardrobe can take a load off your mind and help you to simplify your life in 2021. Working from home during the pandemic made for a reduced choice of clothes for many of us. You do not exactly need to dress to impress for a Zoom call. But when returning to the office wouldn’t it be nice to simplify those choices too?

I took the chance to reduce the number of choices I had, and it has helped to speed up my morning routine. It is also nice to think less about what I have to wear.

#7- Read more in 2021

Reading is an amazing personal trait. It helps to enhance your vocabulary and learn new facts that you would not have known otherwise.

It is suggested by experts that we should read 12 books per year, one every month. I took this goal upon myself last year, during the pandemic and I am so glad that I did! Less screen time before bed has put me in a more relaxed state and helped me to sleep deeper than I have in a very long time.

So, with your new goals in mind, you are ready to tackle 2021 and make the most of the year post-COVID. I like to write my list of goals and place them in a location where they are in full view. Whether this is in the office or the wall of my bedroom I want to make sure that I see them every day and keep them in mind. Some goals can be achieved quickly, while others may be a process. Never give up and be your best self in 2021!
