How checking your horoscope can guide you through ups and downs of everyday life

A horoscope refers to the astrological chart of a person or a moment in time which is calculated from the planetary positions in either the sidereal or tropical Zodiac. The calculations used are based on the date, place and time of birth which is why a horoscope is so personal, like a fingerprint in the stars.

When an astrologer uses an accurately timed chart, the energies carried within are unique to that individual. It’s important to be aware that the chart energies of the planets and signs serve as the potential for personal expressional for that individual.

Horoscopes hold within them the planets, signs, aspects, houses, and other points that reflect potential characteristics and patterns. It is our own free will that allows us to work with these patterns or remould them to be expressed in other ways.

Horoscope astrology not only guides you with your future but also enables you to have information over your past, present and future. Favourable and unfavourable timings in the life of an individual can be identified by reading horoscopes. They can help answer questions related to career, marriage, relationships, promotions, compatibility and much more.

Horoscopes can help us understand our potentials and challenges and how to move through obstacles to achieve a more joyful and fulfilled life. They can dictate how we are born with specific proclivities, strengths, and liabilities, and allow us to understand where we are meant to explore and grow and where we are naturally strongest. Better understanding our horoscopes can guide us to living in complete fullness of our unique selves, while appreciating the uniqueness and potential of others.

While some people think that the horoscope writes our destinies out in stone, it in fact shows potentials. How we use these potentials is our personal prerogative. Horoscopes offer insight and awareness that can help guide us through the ups and downs of everyday life. Even a basic understanding of the planetary placements in your birth chart can be profoundly useful in your everyday life and here’s how:

It helps you understand yourself…

Let’s say I have my sun in Capricorn, my moon in Aries, and that my rising sign is Leo. This reinforces that my identity (sun) centres around being a hard worker with great accountability and a love of getting things done; my needs (moon) include vigorous movements, actions, and emotional expressions; and that my way of showing up in the world (rising) tends to be loving, theatrical, creative, and generous.

Each of these signs also has a less skilful side. When less self-aware or even under more stress, a Capricorn Sun person can become controlling, forget to rest, and be overly needy of external approval. An Aries Moon can fly off the handle or feel constantly in need of attention around their emotional state and a Leo Rising can hog the spotlight while failing to let others shine.

By checking my horoscope, this basic knowledge of myself helps me to care for not only myself but others as well. It also allows me to course-correct towards being my better self when I am being less skilful in my life and relationships. Applying this knowledge to yourself does exactly the same. If you check your own horoscopes to your Sun, Moon and Rising signs you can gain basic knowledge and awareness of yourself for your own wellbeing.

It helps you forgive yourself…

If I have my sun in Scorpio, I might tend to be secretive or overly intense or I might sabotage myself and others when I’m not self-aware or am under-resourced. My scorpion stinger may lash out as a first response to difficulty.

By checking my horoscope and knowing about the many qualities of Scorpio (both skilful and unskilful), it helps me recognise when I’m swinging towards an expression that might be harmful to myself or to others. Being able to recognise it, I can name it and choose to pause, to take care of myself and make a positive shift. I can skip the questioning (“Why do I always do this when I’m stressed?”) and go straight to self-care and engage in more skilful behaviour.

It helps you make decisions…

A good friend of mine recently couldn’t decide which educational path she should pursue. Being a writer like myself, she was uncertain whether she should write novels, short stories, creative non-fiction, articles, blogs, poetry… While we were talking, I suggested looking at her horoscope. This revealed a deeply intuitive nature (Pisces Sun), a love of details (Virgo Moon), and a desire to stand for harmony and beauty in the world (Libra Rising). With this understanding she recognised poetry would be the best path for her. She has entered a creative writing bachelor and is working on a book of poetry focused on the human condition.

Knowing our most important values is an enormous part of making responsible decisions and checking your horoscope can add a lot to our understanding of those values. The deeper you understand your birth chart and horoscope, the more clearly you can step outside of the tension and confusion that accompanies the making of a big decision and into a better sense of which direction to go.
