Here’s What Autumn/Winter 2022 Fashion Looks Like

autumn style fashion

Dig out your parents or grandparents’ old photos because this autumn and winter we’re seeing a fashion comeback of some of the most iconic garments in the likes of acid-wash jeans, pleated skirts, and grandad vests with a modern twist. Not being overly complicated or fussy, this season’s trends are all about adaptability. Whether you’re hitting the holiday party circuit or have intentions of planting yourself firmly on your couch, these pieces can do both.

As we barrel towards the end of summer, I’ve rounded up some of the biggest fashion trends as seen in the fashion weeks to help bring your autumn/winter wardrobe up to date.

Ski Chic

A suitable trend for the cooler weather, chic puffer jackets are back in style. More specifically though the longline quilted jackets – and even puffier dresses – are of the moment. These oversized puffer jackets, coats, and parkas are the highlight of the season. If you’re concerned about being even the slightest bit cold this winter, this thermal statement transcends the cosy mountain vibe into an urban scenario.

Peek-a-Boo Tights

For the transitional season of autumn, there’s no trend more appropriate than tights. I’m thrilled that they’ve made a reappearance on the runway and street style scenes. From old faithful sheer black stockings to add a touch of sensual elegance (and warmth) to an outfit, to bold or embellished tights, they aren’t just a finishing touch anymore – they’re a major part of the whole ensemble.

Avant-garde Knitwear

Summer 2021 was brightened by knitwear in groovy colours and versatile shapes, from skirts and dresses to vets and totes. The autumn/winter season will continue to celebrate knitted garments in comfy yet flattering silhouettes. Pair your oversized knitted dress with chunky women’s boots and faux fur bag for a more relaxed look, or add a touch of luxe to your tie-dye cable knits sweater with off-white flared pants and nylon knee-high boots.

Vests are Back

Maybe a visit to your grandad’s wardrobe is necessary because knitted vests are making a fashion comeback. 2022 designers have spun around the preppy vintage look to offer a ready-to-wear, versatile look that will look perfect on your Instagram story. Fashion gurus are cueing us in on the best styling trends suggesting 70s flares, 90s band tee’s, and chunky boots are perfect for your staple vest.

Pleated Skirt

Your inner schoolgirl is ready to make an entrance this autumn/winter season in elegantly tailored, pleated skirts. The pleated skirt has character, grace, and a touch of sultriness and should be on everyone’s fashion agenda this coming season.

Patchwork & Craftwork

This trend sees sustainability meet craftsmanship in this bold, chic, and extravagant autumn/winter trend. Eco-awareness has been a very hot topic in the fashion industry (and beyond) for quite some time now and designers have been coming up with ways to bring sustainable design practices to the forefront.

The autumn/winter season shows patchwork that utilises unused fabric scraps or past collections become on trend. From floral dresses to quilted coats, patchwork garments cater for a unique bohemian look to ensure you stand out in the crowd.

Denim on Denim

In case you live under a rock, denim is back. Trends focusing on the nostalgic look of 90s baggy grunge jeans, the 80s acid-wash look, and the 70s flares, meaning skinny jeans are on pause. But it’s not just jeans that are embracing the denim revival. Jeans, vests, and asymmetrical skirts played with the patchwork trend are facilitating an exquisite bohemian look you can easily add to your autumn/winter wardrobe while harnessing a creative flair.

Corsets made quite the statement as the key underwear-outerwear look on the autumn/winter catwalks. Pair your new corset with tailored trousers in black-on-black or show how this youth-led key autumn/winter fashion trend can be worn for the day with the addition of sleeves or layers under a blazer.

Full Body Suits

The body suit trend is here to stay, and it’s very deserving of a spot in your autumn/winter wardrobe. This is because they’re extremely practical for winter (hello, layering!). To take the style to the next level for 2022, consider a full body suit, also known as jumpsuits or catsuits. Layer it up with a long cardigan or blazer for an appropriate office look, or add a hoodie or oversized puffer when headed somewhere more casual.

What’s not to love about ruching? The rippled-effected is not only feminine and romantic, it’s super flattering as well. This season, you’ll find side-seam ruching, pleated sleeves, draped skirts, fluted busts, and more. Whatever you decide, the charming detail has a way of making any outfit feel a little more special.
