I spent years wanting a flawless complexion. Through my teens it felt like an unachievable goal with acne-prone skin and an oily complexion. It took a long time, lots of products, and experimenting with different skincare routines before I finally got my skin looking healthy, not oily or dry, and acne-free. I know that many of us run busy lives and the impact of an increasingly polluted environment and dry air from air conditioning all day at work can wreak havoc on our skin. Being the largest organ in the body, and one that acts as a barrier to the world around us, I find that the skin is the one that takes the most damage day to day. Many studies have backed this up, for example, one from the University of Athens, which determined that air pollutants can lead to skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis!
But the following seven facial masks I have found give me that added boost. They help to eliminate toxins and clean clogs and dirt from my pores. The bonus is they can be made at home with ingredients you may just have lying around the house! I find that using one of my DIY face masks at least once a week can work wonders for my skin and leaves it looking fresh and flawless for days on end. Plus, it is great to have that downtime that we all crave!
#1- Coco hydration face mask
This is an amazing face mask I have found works well if you are suffering from that dreaded dry skin. Flakiness and rough skin will be a thing of the past after using the coco hydration face mask once a week! It is fully edible and it makes for a great addition to your skincare routine.
All of the ingredients have been proven to have positive effects on the skin for one reason or another. Avocado has been found to have hydrating properties, as per a study conducted in 2019. On top of that, honey has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can keep all those nasties at bay, which was found numerous times over in studies such as the one published in AIMS Microbiology in 2018. On top of that, the main ingredient in this face mask, cocoa powder, is great for soothing inflamed skin and is even an antioxidant!
- Mash one-quarter of an avocado in a small bowl.
- Stir in one tablespoon cocoa powder and one tablespoon honey, mashing and mixing well.
- Apply the mask to your clean, dry skin for 10 minutes.
- Wash off with warm water, then moisturise as per usual.
#2- Nourishing honey face mask
Once again I turned to honey for this next DIY face mask. With its natural anti-bacterial properties it is perfect for those of us with acne-prone skin and for when I have a few stubborn blemishes that just will not seem to go away. But, for the adolescent among us and even people who suffer from adult acne, this is the best there is!
Then there is one other secret ingredient you may not have thought of before. I add some nutritional yeast into the mix as yeast is also great for treating acne! This is because it is very rich in B-vitamins and helps to calm the skin, along with honey acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. I find this my favourite face mask when I am finding my skin is breaking out around my period.
- Brew one cup of chamomile tea with two tea bags and let cool completely.
- In a tiny bowl, stir together one tablespoon of Manuka or raw honey, and one teaspoon of nutritional yeast.
- Add just enough chamomile tea to the bowl to create a thicker paste that’s still runny enough to spread across your skin, but not too watery.
- Apply a thin layer to your face and let sit for 20 minutes.
- Rinse off and pat dry and moisturise afterward!
#3- Organic banana face mask
This is a great face mask to use in summer! It gives me that tropical feeling, no matter the weather, and I am left with a natural, healthy glow! It is gentle and this means that it is perfect for all skin types, whether you have dry, combination, oily, sensitive, or normal skin. The combination of banana and orange juice makes for a lovely aroma and one that I can sit back and relax at any time of day. It is the best cure for a bad day, to sit back with a book and let go while giving your skin that extra nourishment that it craves.
- Mash one-half of a banana in a bowl.
- Mix in a tablespoon of orange juice and a tablespoon of honey.
- Apply the mask to your face, lumps are OK and keep the mixture on for 15 minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and then moisturise.
#4- The breakfast mask
No, it is not a mask to wear during breakfast, but rather this refers to the breakfast-themed ingredients that make up this amazing face mask! It calms and acts to mattify my oily skin by mixing the soothing properties of oatmeal with the exfoliant properties of the egg yolks. The ingredients are all too easy to come across and yet again I find that they are all fully stocked in my fridge. Again, I add honey as I do to the majority of my DIY face masks so that I get all those benefits that it is known for. Who knew that honey could be so good for your skin?
- Combine one egg yolk, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil with half a cup of oatmeal.
- Stir well, then apply it to your face for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, making sure you can wash oatmeal down the drain, and then moisturise.
#5- Papaya lightening mask
When I start to see uneven skin tone or the rise of some nasty sun spots or pigmentation, the papaya lightening face mask is what I turn to. It helps anyone who suffers from uneven skin, whether it is a result of hyperpigmentation, sun exposure, or anything in between. If this sounds like you then there is no going past this simple and effective mask that will have your skin looking light and even all day long.
- Blend two tablespoons of honey and a half-cup of mashed papaya.
- Gently apply the mixture over your face for 15-20 minutes.
- Wash it off and moisturise.
#6- Honey citrus mask
Again, I have found, like many others, that honey is great for dry skin as it is both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory in its effects. This face mask gives my skin a natural glow and will brighten even the dullest looking skin in minutes. It is based around honey and orange, so I find that it smells great and is an excellent addition to my skincare routine.
- Combine three tablespoons of orange juice with a quarter-cup of honey.
- Rub the mixture lightly over your face and then leave it on for 15 minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and, as always and forever, follow with a moisturiser.
#7- Buttermilk hydration mask
When I feel like my skin needs some exfoliation there is only one face mask that I turn to. Realistically, an exfoliating face mask and a daily moisturiser are all that I need to keep my skin looking fresh and smooth for the week ahead. All of the ingredients for this face mask I keep in my fridge already, so it is my go-to mask when I am in a hurry or do not have time to go down to the shops. It works in a matter of minutes to leave my skin feeling rejuvenated and soft.
